Summary Description: The Visual Arts program seeks to fill a position of Assistant Professor (tenure-track research faculty) or Assistant Professor of Professional Practice (practice faculty), specializing in painting, to teach graduate and undergraduate level courses, effective July 1, 2015.

The program seeks applicants with a vibrant painting practice and teaching experience. The successful candidate will have demonstrated the ability to engage with all students in the MFA program regardless of medium, and be conversant in critical issues and theoretic discussions in the art world.

Teaching at graduate and undergraduate levels is expected, in addition to active participation in departmental committees. The successful candidate must be capable of service and future leadership in the program and must demonstrate the potential for vision and direction that would be appropriate to a director of undergraduate or graduate studies or a program chair for Visual Arts. (The successful candidate would serve rotating terms in one or more of these capacities in the future.)

Minimum Qualifications:

All applicants MUST meet these minimum qualifications to be considered for the position. Candidates for Assistant Professor of Visual Arts (tenure track research position) must have demonstrated and show promise of the capacity for creative work and accompanying pedagogy qualifying them for future nomination to tenure. Graduate and undergraduate teaching experience required.

Candidates for an Assistant Professor of Professional Practice in Visual Arts position must have demonstrated and show promise of continuing to make significant contributions to their areas of professional practice and accompanying pedagogy. Graduate and undergraduate teaching experience required.
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree or equivalent experience preferred.
Additional Information: The Visual Arts program attracts artists working in all forms including painting, print media, photography, sculpture, moving image, and new genres. The Program has 10 full time faculty, 40 adjunct faculty, 54 graduate students and over 500 undergraduate enrollments in approximately 40 courses each year.

Columbia University School of the Arts offers Masters of Fine Arts Degrees in four disciplines: film, theatre, visual arts and writing, as well as a Masters of Arts and related undergraduate programs.

The School is especially interested in qualified candidates whose record of achievement will contribute to the diversity goals of the institution.

The applicant may enable RAPS to generate an automatic email to the reference provider, politely requesting a letter of reference and offering a secure link to the RAPS website where a letter can be uploaded quickly and easily.
