Watts Gallery Trust seeks to promote the understanding and appreciation of G F Watts and Mary Seton Watts in the context of the 19th Century. Watts Gallery and Artists’ village is located in the idyllic rural setting of Compton, Surrey. The complex of buildings comprises the recently restored and award winning Watts Gallery, the Watts Chapel, the Watts house and studios, and the Old Pottery. Watts Gallery is described as a national Gallery in the heart of a village and has recently secured national acclaim for its ground breaking exhibitions.

We are seeking to appoint an innovative, skilled and ambitious Curator who will take forward the vision of creating a lively and varied exhibition programme ranging from in-focus displays of one or two objects to important loan exhibitions attracting national and international attention. The successful candidate will maintain the Watts Gallery’s reputation as a centre for original research in the fields of 19th century art, architecture, literature and social history. Reporting into the Director of the Watts Gallery Trust, he or she will work with the senior management team, which includes the Marketing Manager and Accounts Manager, and manage the Head of Learning, Heritage Collections Officer, Curatorial staff, volunteers, scholars and interns. By tradition, the curator has always lived in the Curator’s house attached to the gallery.

We are looking for a passionate and experienced specialist with a minimum of 10 years’ museum or gallery experience, including five years in a senior position with Curatorial responsibilities. The successful candidate will have significant experience and interest in 19th Century art and history, will be an art historian with a track record of published material, and have an established and respected reputation within the museum or gallery network. This post requires a proactive individual with strong creative flair and interpersonal skills. The selected candidate will have the exciting opportunity of contributing to the £5m Saving the Watts Studios project in Limnerslease, the Arts & Crafts home of G.F and Mary Watts, which is part funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, as well as contributing to the long-term vision and strategy for Watts Gallery – an Artists’ village.
