Maps
There are now many interesting examples of projects to map the Occupy movement (map in this case involving geospatial information, not only 'visualization' or 'conceptual map' of Occupy).
A few examples:
Additional notes re: maps and geo
Geo tweets visualization:
After setting up an Ushahidi instance using CrowdMaps, I noticed that tweets don't automatically become reports - and there doesn't seem to be any way to do this. The model is that each tweet can be used to autopopulate the report form with a fair amount of info. I suppose this is good for info verification. But I'm now Imagining data visualization of #Occupy tweets, and came up with following ideas on the way home:
- Tweets w/geolocation, over time. This is a 'watch it blossom and spread' data visualization. At a certain point there may be so many that you'd need to only display 1 dot per (10, 100, 1000) tweets.
- Add another layer on topx, but also w/geodata, over time. Blog posts (that generate a certain amount of inbound links?) Use a different color.
- Third color: print newspapers. When there's a story, the geographic area of the paper physical distribution lights up (?) Inspired by front page newspaper coverage visualizations.
- Another color: broadcast TV coverage.
- Note re: beyond simple mentions, how about framing analysis? Also, source analysis?
